WHEN A TRANSFORMATION TAKES PLACE
AN AMAZING THING HAPPENS

The Transformation Project

The Transformation Project started in 2005 with the restoration of the Leeds Grand Theatre to its former glory and the construction rehearsal rooms for Opera North. It now continues with the restoration of the Howard Assembly Room, creating a new venue adjacent to Leeds Grand Theatre.

Opera North, Leeds Grand Theatre and Leeds City Council are working together in close partnership to deliver the hugely ambitious Transformation project.

A New Stage for Opera North
With phase one compeleted, phase two of the project began in autumn 2007 and will see the restoration of the Howard Assembly Room adjacent to Leeds Grand Theatre. The Howard Assembly Room will be a 350-seat flexible performance space, to nurture young performers, showcase the work of new artists and host special musical events.

The Assembly Howard Room will give Opera North a new stage and new opportunities to show work that will complement the main stage opera programme. It will provide Leeds with a new and exciting venue.

Artist's Impression of the New Assembly Rooms

The new space will also provide a vibrant hub of educational activity, a rehearsal room for the Orchestra of Opera North and a focal point for social and corporate activities, seminars and talks. Phase two also involves the restoration of the theatre’s façade, the Emerald Grand Hall, front-of-house foyer, main staircase, Dress Circle bar and artists’ dressing rooms. Building work is expected to be completed in December 2008.

Transformation Phase One
Phase One of the project is now complete. For Opera North it has provided two new rehearsal rooms, a scenery bridge link between the Opera Centre and Leeds Grand Theatre and a hydraulic lift to raise lorries from street to stage level. In Leeds Grand Theatre there was a technical upgrade including a steel scenery suspension grid, a new flying system and an enlarged orchestra pit and a complete refurbishment of the Yorkshire Bank Auditorium with improved sightlines, new seating and an air-cooling system.

Transformation Fundraising
Fundraising for the Transformation Project continues to be led by Opera North with the support of  Leeds Grand Theatre. A volunteer fundraising team, comprising influential members of the business, media and other communities across the region, complements a communications strategy designed to raise positive awareness and secure contributions.

Funds continue to be generated from private individuals, the corporate sector, trusts and foundations.
