June '10 Opera North's First Community Choir

A new Leeds based community choir rehearsed together for the final time before the curtain went up on their debut Sing:ON performance in the Howard Assembly Room on Saturday 12 June, the culmination of six months of creative workshops with Opera North.

The choir, ranging in age from three to sixty, was made up of youngsters from Little London and Shakespeare Primary Schools, in addition to family, community members and local secondary schools.  It was formed by Opera North Education to encourage singing across generations and communities and increase engagement in education and the arts.

The choir has been working with a team of artists from Opera North on a weekly basis for the past six months. The choir performed three pieces, The River Journey, Fantasy Songs and The Tempest, written in conjunction with composers James Redwood, Richard Barnard and Kate Pearson.

The final performance premiered in the Howard Assembly Room on Saturday 12 June at 2.30pm and 4.30pm. Each performance was an hour long, and was semi-staged, using filmed imagery of the performers themselves, put together by video artist Ellie Rees and Director Hazel Gould.
