Orchestra Chorus & Concerts Director

Opera North, based in Leeds, is England’s National Opera Company in the North, acclaimed for the diversity and creativity of its programming across a breadth of music and theatrical genres.

Under the artistic leadership of Richard Farnes, the work and quality of the company, including its Chorus and Orchestra, has become bold and distinctive, and was recently described in the press as “the most interesting opera company in the UK” (Financial Times).

The work of the Orchestra of Opera of North, as a symphonic ensemble giving around 35 concerts each year, defines the Company as unique amongst the UK opera companies. The breadth of musical output including opera, concerts, recordings and education creates a stimulating environment enabling us to attract and retain some of the best orchestral talent.

The Orchestra Chorus and Concerts Director joins an experienced management team and is responsible for all aspects of the management of the Orchestra and Chorus including scheduling, budgeting, union negotiations and contracts.

As Concerts Director the person appointed works closely with the Music Director in devising the symphonic programme, developing the recording portfolio, selecting and contracting artists and conductors.

Key to this role is an ability to maintain a wide range of relationships internally and externally – with promoters, local authorities, broadcast and recording companies, other performing ensembles, venues and artists’ agents.  Thus quality of judgement, personal and entrepreneurial skills will be critical.

This is a great job in a great opera company and will require broad knowledge of the operatic and concert repertoire together with significant relevant experience.

This is a permanent, full-time appointment. Salary by negotiation.

Deadline for applications:  midday, Monday 14 May 2012
