The Chorus of Opera North has been an integral part
of the Company since its foundation in 1978 and has
established an enviable reputation for quality and versatility
in its own right.
It has appeared with the Company all over the north
of England and regular appearances at the Edinburgh
Festival. Foreign tours have included Weber's Oberon
at La Fenice, Venice, in 1987; Aida, Midsummer Marriage
and Macbeth at the Wiesbaden May Festivals; Boris Godunov
in Dortmund; Attila and Billy Budd in Rotterdam; the
world première of Benedict Mason's Playing Away in Munich.
Most recently in 2001, at the Gran Teatre Liceu Barcelona
with Britten's Gloriana and Janácek's The Cunning Little
Vixen. Opera North's visit to the Liceu was the first
by a non-Spanish company since the theatre re-opened
after being destroyed by fire some 4 years earlier.

The Chorus has also given a wide range of concerts including
the world premières of Takamitsu's My Way of Life and
Philip Wilby's A New World Dancing. In 2001 it gave
performances of Duruflé's Requiem in Leeds Parish Church
and Brahms' German Requiem in York Minster.
The Chorus of Opera North has made a number of outstanding
recordings including Walton's Troilus and Cressida,
for which Opera North was awarded the 1995 Gramophone
award for Best Opera recording. The chorus has also
been part of many radio and television broadcasts and
featured in Phyllida Lloyd's Emmy Award-winning film
Gloriana. |
