Operations: Primary Schools
Operations is a series of creative workshops for primary schools accompanying a small-scale opera. The school children involved are given the opportunity to explore the opera that they are going to see and experiment with the art forms that combine to produce an opera.
In Autumn 2009, Opera North Education toured a brand new opera Swanhunter, by Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton, to venues across the north of England.
This year Operations will look at another opera by Jonathan Dove, the well known story of The Adventures of Pinocchio. Opera North artists will lead a series of one day workshops for primary school children in years 5 and 6 introducing them to the opera. The project will follow the mainstage tour, working with primary schools in Leeds, Edinburgh, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham.
By working with a professional singer and director, the children learn about the show’s plot, themes and characters and have the opportunity to experiment with some of the art forms which combine to produce opera including; singing, drama and design. The children also try their hands at directing a singer and performing songs and scenes from the opera to their teachers and school friends.
There is an exclusive schools' performance of The Adventures of Pinocchio at Leeds Grand Theatre on Wednesday 15 December at 11am. Please contact Opera North Education for further information education@operanorth.co.uk.
