Operations: Primary Schools
Operations is a series of creative workshops for primary schools accompanying a small-scale opera. The school children involved are given the opportunity to explore the opera that they are going to see, and experiment with the art forms that combine to produce an opera.
In Autumn 2008, Opera North Education toured a chamber version of Humperdinck’s fairytale opera, Hansel and Gretel to venues across the north of England.
To accompany the show, artists led a series of one day workshops for primary school children in years 5 and 6, designed to introduce them to the opera. Operations with Hansel and Gretel worked with a wide range of primary schools including those in rural, urban and coastal areas of the north of England.
By working with a professional singer and director, the children learn about the show’s plot, themes and characters and have the opportunity to experiment with some of the art forms which combine to produce opera including; singing, drama and design. The children also try their hands at directing a singer, and performing songs and scenes from the opera to their teachers and school friends.
