Leeds Asperger's Music Theatre Project
A weekly project for young people with Asperger’s Syndrome which takes place once a year.
From January to March 2009, 14 young people with Asperger’s Syndrome aged 10-14, took part in a creative out-of-schools project over a 10 week period in Leeds. Each week, they worked alongside a team of four professional artists comprising of a director, a composer, a singer and a designer, who challenged them to work together to create a new piece of musical theatre.
Following on from this success, Opera North Education is delighted to announce that this project will be running again from January – March 2010. Once again, it is aimed at young people aged 10-14 with Asperger’s Syndrome who wish to take part in creative and musical activities on Saturday afternoons during the Spring term. The project starts on Saturday 9 January from 2pm – 4.30pm and runs for 10 weeks (with a break for half term).
This project provides an opportunity for young people with Asperger’s Syndrome to participate in something they would not normally have access to. The positive atmosphere aims to develop young people’s skills, and give them the opportunity make new friends and try out new activities.
"From my point of view, it’s great to see Michael get involved to the degree he has and making new friends and actually talking about it" Parent
The closing date for application is Friday 20 November 2009.
Once all applications have been received we may feel it necessary to arrange informal meetings with parents/carers of each applicant to discuss their specific needs in relation to the project. As spaces are limited, priority will be given to new applicants, however previous participants are welcome to apply.
