An Overview

The Howard Assembly Room is a captivating, inspiring performance venue loved equally by performers and guests for its blend of Victorian and contemporary styling.

The 300 capacity central Leeds venue is a fitting host to receive Opera North’s rich and varied performance programming. In the last three years alone, the Howard Assembly Room has welcomed thousands of guests to hundreds of ticketed events, and has firmly established itself as one of Yorkshire’s most important centres for progressive and diverse musical performances.

And that’s not all. The venue also plays an important role in fuelling the Yorkshire cultural scene with a varied programme of events, gigs, films, talks and family workshops.

Finally, the venue serves as vital rehearsal space for Opera North’s award winning Orchestra, and has recently launched as a unique venue for corporate and private hire.

The Howard Assembly Room is located inside Leeds Grand Theatre

Leeds Grand Theatre is situated on New Briggate in the heart of Leeds City Centre.

The theatre is easily accessible by public transport. It is approximately 10 minutes walk from the main bus station and 15 minutes walk from the train station with many buses stopping in the immediate vicinity. For the most up to date information on local bus and train times, please check WYMetro. There is also a taxi rank outside the theatre although we recommend booking a taxi in advance, particularly on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Parking is available at various nearby car parks, including Edward Street/Templar Street and the St John's and Merrion Centre shopping malls. A limited amount of on street parking is available near the theatre is free after 6pm but this does tend to fill up very quickly.

Access

Howard Assembly Room is committed to improving access for our audiences and aims to ensure that disabled visitors have an enjoyable experience. We have an infra-red system for visitors with hearing impairments, wheelchair spaces and lift access through Leeds Grand Theatre. We also welcome guide dogs and hearing dogs. Please note that disability concessions and wheelchair spaces cannot be booked online - please call 0844 848 2727 or book in person so Box Office staff can advise on how we can meet your specific access needs.

History

  • The original Assembly Rooms opened at the Leeds Grand Theatre in 1879
  • For most of the 20th century the venue operated as a cinema, including a brief ‘flash’ showing adult films in the 1970s.
  • The venue was expertly renovated from 2007-2009
  • The Howard Assembly Room reopened in January 2009 as a flexible and eclectic arts venue programmed by Opera North
