KATIE MITCHELL'S FIVE TRUTHS HEADS NORTH TO MEET INVISIBLE FLOCK

This February, the Howard Assembly Room makes its annual transformation into a free gallery space as acclaimed video installation Five Truths comes direct from the V&A to its first UK showing outside London. The installation will be enhanced in Leeds by a new Opera North Projects commission, Who is Ophelia? a digital city-wide trail by Yorkshire-based interactive arts organisation, Invisible Flock.

CAROUSEL CASTING INFORMATION

Opera North is delighted to announce initial casting information for its upcoming production, in collaboration with the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, of the blockbuster American musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel, opening in Leeds in May 2012 with subsequent performances at The Lowry, Salford and the Barbican, London. In March 2013 the production transfers to Paris.

TRIUMPH, BETRAYAL AND SACRIFICE: STRONG, PASSIONATE WOMEN DOMINATE AT OPERA NORTH THIS WINTER

It’s a season of ‘Strong Women’ both on and off stage at Opera North from January 2012, with three operas highlighting female strength of character; Norma (Norma), Cleopatra, (Giulio Cesare) and Butterfly (Madama Butterfly), whilst some of the most impressive female singers on the current UK and European stage give everything to their roles: Annemarie Kremer (Norma), Sarah Tynan (Cleopatra), Pamela Helen Stephen (Caesar) and Anne Sophie Duprels (Butterfly).

CREATIVE SUCCESS AT FIRST EVER CULTURE HACK NORTH

Last weekend, a group of 50 computer hackers were granted access to the digital archives of Northern arts and heritage institutions as part of Culture Hack North: Leeds 2011. The 24 hour non-stop event, organised by Opera North as part of Leeds Digital Festival, was the first of its kind in the North of England.

Opera North Children’s Chorus Facts and Figures

In February 2011 Opera North launched its search for Yorkshire’s best young singers to produce the Company’s first ever large scale Children’s Chorus and the UK’s first focused, regular ensemble of its kind. 160 children aged 7-13 auditioned for places to bring the total number of members to 92. This unique opportunity will develop the children’s vocal potential and take them to the stage under the guidance of a major arts organisation.
