A spirit of optimism infuses Opera North’s 2012/13 season as we celebrate opera in all its extraordinary richness and diversity.
The exciting American baritone Eric Greene, who made his UK debut to strong reviews last month with Birmingham Opera Company, joins the cast of Carousel as Billy Bigelow this week, in a major new production opening on 2nd May at Leeds Grand Theatre.
An outstanding production team bring new life to one of the greatest musicals of the twentieth century, in a brand new production of the blockbuster American musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel. Carousel will open in Leeds in May 2012 for three weeks, swiftly followed by a week on tour at The Lowry, Salford Quays and five weeks at The Barbican, London in August 2012.
Revel in the arrival of Spring this year with a jam-packed and unrestrained programme in the Howard Assembly Room. From celebrations of the great post-war Broadway musicals to the best of young British opera talent, and from dynamic contemporary jazz acts to the summery sound of Garifuna soul.
Ruddigore, Opera North's hugely successful operetta, will travel to three new venues this summer in a one-off tour that visits Sheffield and crosses borders to Edinburgh and Belfast. Audiences in these cities will now be able to revel in this witty Victorian melodrama, which is considered one of Gilbert & Sullivan's most inventive works.
The must-see musical of 2012, Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel is brought vividly to life in an outstanding new stage production in Leeds, Salford Quays and London. This timeless American classic will be recreated in a vibrant staging combining evocative design, gripping storytelling and powerful musical performance.
Opera North welcomes American tenor Erik Nelson Werner to sing the role of Siegmund in its new concert staging of Die Walküre, which opens at Leeds Town Hall on 16 June 2012, replacing Jeffrey Lloyd Roberts who has withdrawn from the role.
A generous donation from Jimbo's Fund, a fund set up by the late Leeds businessman and philanthropist Jimi Heselden, has enabled creative young people aged 10-15 with Asperger’s Syndrome to access a series of tailored workshops run by Opera North.
Opera North, England’s national opera company based in Leeds, and Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) are delighted to announce a new partnership aimed at nurturing and inspiring young musical talent in the North.
