Four Seasons: Winter

Back to What's On

Synopsis

"At midnight the soul dreams of a small fire
of stars flaming on the other side of the sky..."
(from In spite of everything, the stars, by Edward Hirsch)

It’s Winter, and the skeletal trees and frozen ground lead us indoors to the beautiful and intimate Bretton Chapel, for the final instalment of Opera North’s Four Seasons residency.

Songs from Schubert’s existential masterpiece, Winterreise (A Winter’s Journey), rub shoulders with playful Broadway musical numbers by Lerner and Loewe, and the sublime baroque masterpieces of Henry Purcell. Violin, cello and accordion accompany two singers, and visuals are provided by scenographer Becs Andrews, in what promises to be a festive and totally engaging winter’s evening.

Conceived and performed by cellist Matthew Sharp (‘virtuosic, charismatic, brimming with verve and poetry’, The Times), and featuring the acclaimed young accordionist Milos Milivojevic (of whom The Independent said, ‘Milivojevic’s artistry on the humble button accordion took the breath away’).
