Just left the theatre, travelled up from Cardiff for this performance and I still have tingling in my arms. Anne Sophie was the best Cho Cho San I have ever seen or heard. The voice was perfect, always vulnerable even when seemingly in control. Her characterization and subtle playing with the shoes, perfect. Well done all. Off to Norma tomorrow and really excited after the quality of tonight's offering by Opera North?

Duprels and Taylor both absolutely fantastic in this production. The set and costumes were both excellently interpreted. I saw it back in November and loved it!

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance.Thought Cio Cio San's change in demeanor from Japanese bride to American's wife was both subtle and sharp, and have never seen such a hard working Suzuki. The set was clever, but I worried over the stone step, (as, so it seemed, did the cast). A brilliant night.

What the critics say

...the Japanese textures never soupy, more like a clear, palette-cleansing bowl of miso.

The Guardian - Read full review

Best of all, the young Italian conductor Daniele Rustioni shapes the music with irresistible energy and sensibility. He could well be the next Antonio Pappano.

The Times - Read full review

As for Anne Sophie Duprels, returning to the title role, it would be hard to find, or even imagine, a more thoroughly committed rendering of it.

The Independent - Read full review

Stewart is so physically engaging – young, attractive, smiling – that you feel reluctantly inclined to sympathise with him. He also knows how to act, and his voice is young enough, fresh enough to make him credible.

Did You Know?

The hit musical Miss Saigon is inspired by Madama Butterfly. Though the setting has been moved to the Vietnam War, the story of love and betrayal remains the same.
