The
development of The Grand Theatre will provide a theatre-going
experience of the highest quality. For more details,
please see the
Transformation project website.

Today, The Grand Theatre is
widely regarded as a major milestone in Victorian theatre building. The theatre
continues to play an important role in the cultural life of Leeds and is a
preferred touring venue, attracting an annual audience of over a quarter of a
million to performances ranging from opera, ballet, dance and music to comedy
and children's entertainment.
But the building has suffered a
gradual physical deterioration which, combined with the sometimes dubious
legacy of maintenance work carried out over the years, has hidden features and
craftsmanship of great historical significance.
The development of Leeds Grand Theatre will attract the
best theatre companies in the world and create a stunning and comfortable
environment for audiences. Transformation will restore
and reveal the theatre's splendid 'hidden heritage' whilst creating a
comfortable environment that enables audiences to relax and enjoy performances
to the full.

The
Assembly Rooms
The Assembly Rooms,
an exceptionally beautiful listed building designed to complement
the main theatre, was at the heart of the city's social
life for a hundred years.

The restoration of the Assembly Rooms' New Briggate frontage will create a
stunning landmark in a currently neglected area of the city. The Assembly
Rooms' grand entrance will be brought back into use and the full beauty of the
architecture will be revealed.
The restoration, a priceless part of the city's heritage, will provide a space
for education workshops and special events, showcasing new talent, and a
rehearsal home of the Opera North orchestra.
