Dementia Friendly Performances

As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the government’s advice regarding social gatherings and live performance, we are very sorry to announce the postponement of our Autumn 2020 and Winter 2021 seasons. Ticket holders will be contacted directly. Read the full statement or see our FAQs for details.

Dementia friendly performances are tailored for people with dementia and their families or carers, so that they can enjoy live performance in an environment that is comfortable and supportive.

In the performance, any bright lighting or loud noises will be reduced. The lights in the theatre will remain on low, and there will be a very relaxed attitude to people leaving and returning whenever they need to, with quiet spaces available if people need a break. You can ask to have empty seats around your booking, and there will be clear signs and friendly staff on hand to help.

Dementia friendly opera | La bohème

Opera North is a member of the Dementia Action Alliance and is a dementia friendly organisation. We’re thrilled that our first dementia friendly performance of La bohème in 2019 complimented ‘Music for Dementia 2020,’ a national campaign that highlighted the positive social impact music has on those living with dementia.
