Covid-19 Safety Measures – Summer Strings Academy

The Opera North Summer Strings Academy follows Government advice for the Protective measures for out-of-school settings during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak as well as the Guidance for implementing protective measures in education and childcare settings.

Information last updated: 22 July 2020.

Bubbles and Distancing

  • Participants will be split into Bubbles which they will stay within for the entire week. They will work with the same Opera North musicians and pastoral staff throughout the week and will not encounter other groups.
  • Bubbles, or string ensembles will work from the same allocated rooms in the venue through the whole week. Participants will be asked to wipe down their chairs and music stands after use.
  • Participants will use individual music stands and rehearse a minimum of 2 metres away from each other within any one ensemble. Rehearsals and routes through the building will have distancing marked out.
  • Players will only handle music on their own stand.
  • Players will be required to keep their own music for the duration of the week.
  • Rehearsal spaces will be cleaned prior to use and any surfaces wiped.
  • Hand washing and sanitisation will be carried out throughout the day, with hygiene stations on the routes used by participants and staff.
  • Drop off and pick up times will be allocated to each group and must be strictly enforced in order to avoid the mixing of Bubbles. Where possible, participants are encouraged to walk or cycle to the venue.

Venue

  • Where possible Bubbles will be allocated their own toilets; otherwise toilet breaks will be scheduled in order to prevent the mixing of Bubbles. Bathrooms will be cleaned at regular intervals.
  • Walkways will be marked for access to players seats. Where possible there will be one entrance and one exit from each room.
  • Disinfectant wipes will be available for players to be able to wipe down any new surface they may encounter
  • A maximum number of people will always be maintained in the venue.
  • Participants will be asked to wear new, clean clothes each day and bring lunches wrapped in disposable packaging. Water bottles must be clearly labelled and washed at home at the end of each day.
  • Opera North Staff have undertaken Covid-specific First Aid Training.
  • All staff and participants will have their temperature checked upon arrival at the venue each morning.

In the case of Covid symptoms

  • Details of daily processes for both participants and staff will be distributed prior to the camp, including an action plan should any person feel unwell or display symptoms of Covid-19.
  • Should any single person display symptoms of Covid-19, all families will be contacted, and participants sent home immediately to follow government advice in regard to self-isolation. In this situation participants will be entitled to a partial fee refund.
