Education and engagement

Opera North Young Voices

The Opera North Young Voices (ONYV) offers a perfect transition between the Children’s Chorus and the Youth Chorus and continues to provide expert training to enable young people to perfect their vocal technique and musicianship skills.

Members receive training and guidance from experienced choral leaders and have the opportunity to work with professional directors and movement specialists to develop skills in drama and stagecraft.

There are performing opportunities throughout the year, both locally and nationally, alongside professionals such as the Opera North Orchestra and Chorus. Repertoire includes both Secular and sacred music, from a variety of genres, with a particular focus of classical music/opera. Members also have the opportunity to audition for mainstage productions.

Entry is by audition, but we are looking for potential and welcome singers of all levels of experience. Membership fees apply, but we are able to offer financial assistance to ensure that costs do not create a barrier to taking part.

  • When and where do we meet? Every Thursday evening (term time only) from 6.00pm to 8.00pm at Yorkshire Dance, 3 St Peter’s Square, Leeds, LS9 8AH.
  • When will the next round of auditions take place? Auditions will be held in Leeds on Thursday 14 September 2017.
  • How and when can I apply? We will be welcoming expressions of interest throughout the year. Please complete the online form below to be added to our waiting list and we will be in touch with further details about the chorus and auditions.

What performance opportunities are there for members?

The following performances are confirmed for 2017-18:

  • Christmas Concert with the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North at Dewsbury Town Hall in December 2017
  • Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust with the Orchestra of Opera North, Leeds Festival Chorus and Leeds Philharmonic Chorus at Leeds Town Hall in May 2018

How much does it cost?
Membership fee is £50 per term. We want to ensure that costs do not create a barrier to taking part and are able to offer financial assistance to those who wouldn’t be able to join without our support.
