2016/17 Kirklees Concert Season announced

Subscriber booking opens today after the programme for the 2016-17 Kirklees Concert Season was announced by Opera North and Kirklees Council at a public launch in Huddersfield’s Hudawi Centre.

For the 14th year of their unique partnership, the two organisations have re-stated their commitment to keep music ‘live and local’ with evening concerts at Huddersfield Town Hall from the Orchestra of Opera North and lunchtime organ concerts with Kirklees Borough Organist Dr Gordon Stewart and guests. Dewsbury Town Hall will host a series of lunchtime chamber concerts, and there are opportunities for young and old to get involved.

The season opens in Huddersfield’s newly-refurbished Town Hall on 22 September with Fantastic Dreams and Visions, conjured by the Orchestra of Opera North under the baton of the company’s new Music Director, Aleksandar Markovic. A Scriabin enthusiast, Markovic conducts the Russian composer’s ethereal Nuances and its perfect counterpart: the dream-world of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. In between, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Pavel Kolesnikov performs Rachmaninov’s Variations on a theme of Paganini. Markovic returns to Huddersfield to conduct Viennese Whirl, the ever-popular programme of Strauss waltzes and other New Year favourites, on 29 December.

In a fun-packed introduction to classical music for younger audiences and their families, the Orchestra of Opera North will be taken to pieces by CBeebies presenter Pui Fan Lee in How it Works on 23 October. Well-known pieces including Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and Stravinsky’s Firebird will put each section of the ensemble in the spotlight, breaking down the barriers, explaining the traditions and exposing the myths surrounding the orchestra.

From high Cs to high seas, charismatic Swiss conductor Stefan Blunier helms Tales Beneath the Stars, a nautically-inspired evening at Huddersfield Town Hall on 24 November. Berlioz’s Overture from Le Corsaire celebrates the life of the brigand while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade includes some intense evocations of the changing moods of the ocean. Starting out on dry land, Prokofiev’s exhilarating opening suite from Romeo & Juliet launches the evening.

There are more delights for families in December with the return of two festive fixtures. The Snowman & Other Tales (13 December) brings Raymond Briggs’ classic animation to the big screen, accompanying a live performance of Howard Blake’s enchanting score. Opera North stalwart John Savournin completes the bill with Paul Patterson’s settings of Roald Dahl’s Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. A sell-out in 2015, the Opera North Christmas Concert is back at Dewsbury Town Hall on 15 December, with an irresistible seasonal programme including Bach, Vivaldi and Puccini, and a chance for the audience to join in with some favourite carols.

The orchestral programme resumes in style in 2017 with Shaken and Stirred: The Music of James Bond on 26 January at Huddersfield Town Hall. Joined by guest vocalists, the Orchestra of Opera North demonstrates its licence to thrill with excerpts from all 24 films from Dr. No to Spectre.

On 30 March, Aleksandar Markovic is back to close the Kirklees Concert Season with a ravishing journey in sound from the eerie Finnish forests of Sibelius’s Tapiola to the majestic peaks of Strauss’s Alpine Symphony, via Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with Classical Brit Award-winner Jack Liebeck featured on violin.
