Lesley Garrett returns to opera

We are delighted to announce the return of one of the UK's best loved artists, Lesley Garrett, to Opera North. Lesley will sing the role of Elle in a new production of Poulenc's La Voix Humaine in February 2013.

Poulenc wrote this one-act opera for a solo character, based on the Jean Cocteau play written for the French Soprano Denise Duval. It is the operatic equivalent of ‘Cinéma vérité’ and has been performed by many of the leading singing actresses of our time, including Dames Josephine Barstow, Gwyneth Jones and Felicity Lott, as well as Jessye Norman, Magda Olivero, Renata Scotto, Anja Silja, Elisabeth Soderstrom, Galina Vishnevskaya and Joan Rodgers.

It is considered by many to have the intensity in 45 minutes of a 3-act opera and punches far above its short length and seemingly intimate setting.

Opera North is very excited to present Lesley's return to main-stream opera in this extra-ordinary opera.

It is great that Opera North decided to make a new production of La Voix Humaine. It's a very interesting and beautiful music but unfortunately rarely performed. I am really looking forward to watching it!
