Richard Mantle and the Orchestra of Opera North lead the memorial service and tribute to Lord Harewood this Friday, 30th September, at Harewood House, Yorkshire. In a service of Thanksgiving for the life of George Henry Hubert Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood, guests include friends from Lord Harewood's life and career in the arts, music and sport.
With a great passion for opera and the arts, Lord Harewood created English National Opera North, based in Leeds, in 1978. He had a firm belief that opera should be readily accessible to everyone. The foundation of Opera North was then, and still is, the only truly national company based in England outside London.
Lord Harewood was incredibly committed to Opera North and served as Vice Chairman and Founder, in addition to contributing a great level of expertise and direction to the Company over the last 33 years. He recently attended the first part of Opera North's Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold, at Leeds Town Hall and was proud to have been part of that momentous musical occasion.
The fact that Opera North has blossomed into one of the most innovative and successful opera companies in the UK, critically regarded and admired by audiences, is a testament to Lord Harewood's vision and the Company is honoured to have played such a part in his Memorial.
