Music will be theirs: Funding announced for next year of In Harmony Opera North

Opera North is delighted that the Department for Education (DfE) has today confirmed that funding for In Harmony Opera North will continue for another year from April 2017, as part of a multimillion pound investment in music and arts education.

This combines with recent confirmation that continued funding for In Harmony Opera North will be made available by Arts Council England, to ensure the future of the programme for 2017-18.

In response to the DfE announcement, Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England said:

'Every child and young person should experience the richness of the arts, no matter what their background. Cultural education helps children develop their knowledge, understanding and skills, and improves their attainment across the school curriculum. This ongoing commitment to invest in high quality cultural education inside and outside of school is good news for children.'

This new film shows the impact of this innovative community residency through its first three years - during which time, In Harmony Opera North has expanded to include its third school, and is now reaching over 1000 school children in Leeds each week.

In Harmony Opera North aims to inspire and transform the lives of children, their families and wider communities through school and community-based orchestral music-making.

The programme offers every child and teacher the opportunity to learn a stringed instrument, to play together in orchestras, sing in a choir, and to perform alongside the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North, in addition to further community-based performances.

Wonderful - of course the government (of which ever party!) should have their heads up, roll this out all over the country and expand services instead of making cuts - in other words take much more of a long term view of children's future well-being.
