Opera North is holding a series of free events to recognise European Opera Dayswhich takes place on the 11th and 12th of May this year. In a celebration of the talent involved in the art of Opera across Europe, 107 Opera Companies across 24 countries will organise activities and performances to join together existingOpera enthusiasts and help to encourage the growth of a new Opera fan base.
As part of the continental festivities, Opera North will be:
• Producing a series of 3 ‘Concerts in a Café’ in which soprano Bibi Heal, a regular Opera North collaborator, will perform a variety of songs from France, Eastern Europe and Latin America at the Help the Aged Café in the city centre.
• Holding a family ‘May Morning’ singing workshop on Saturday 10.30am-12.30pm, exploring the music of Benjamin Britten to coincide with the opening of their new production of ‘Albert Herring’. This will be led by composer and animateur Dom Harlan with a guest appearance from Gillene Herbert, part of theOpera North chorus. Participants will have the chance to learn some of the most famous opera arias, hear Gillene sing and also embark on writing their own music.
With their family and community focus, these events will be a brilliant way of introducing the Opera art form to newcomers.
