Opera North wins Arts and Culture Award

Opera North is the proud winner of the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Award 2014 for Arts and Culture, following a ceremony at Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate on 17 November.

The White Rose Awards are the largest celebration of the very best in tourism throughout the Yorkshire region. The annual awards, run by Welcome to Yorkshire, aim to recognise a wide range of achievements in tourism provision, covering 16 categories including the best Yorkshire attractions, hotels, restaurants and many more.

2014 has been an historic year for Yorkshire with record numbers of visitors following the unprecedented success of the Yorkshire Festival and the Tour de France over the summer, with Opera North performing in the Opening Ceremony for the Tour de France in July.

In addition to critically acclaimed productions ranging from Puccini’s The Girl of the Golden West to Monteverdi’s The Coronation of Poppea, Opera North this year celebrated the monumental achievement of reaching the overwhelming conclusion to Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, the success of which has lead to a series of complete performance cycles of The Ring being planned for 2016.

Other winners of the 2014 White Rose Awards included The Deep Hull (Large Visitor Attraction), National Railway Museum York (Tourism Event of the Year) and Harrogate International Centre (Business Tourism).
