Der Rosenkavalier

Il tabarro / Suor Angelica

Billy Budd

Perfectly poised between comedy and pathos, Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier supplies an evening  of gorgeous music, sumptuous costumes and romantic intrigue, by turns comic and moving. Aleksandar Markovic conducts his first production as Opera North’s new Music Director.

Two intense and theatrical operas, one evening of vintage Puccini. Join us on an emotional journey from the darkly atmospheric music of Il tabarro, a noir-thriller set in working class Paris, to the ethereal beauty of the heart-rending Suor Angelica.

With its evocative music, stellar cast and stunning set, Opera North's new production of Billy Budd, one of Britten's greatest operas, promises to be an unforgettable experience... Embark on a powerful psychological journey of one man's inner turmoil as his past comes back to haunt him.

January – March 2017

The Snow Maiden

Hansel and Gretel

Sure to melt the iciest of hearts, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden is a delightfully coloured, folk-inspired opera based on a well-loved Russian fairy tale. A gorgeous and lyrical evocation of the natural world, imaginitively blending and contrasting worlds of fantasy and reality.

A contemporary take on a classic story with magical music by Humperdinck, Hansel and Gretel reveals the perils of growing up! In perhaps the most popular operatic fairy tale of them all, brother and sister escape to the world of the forest, both idyllic and dangerous...

An evening of pure magic is in store in Cinderella (La Cenerentola), uniting the fun, fire and brilliance of Rossini's music with a fresh and witty production. This sparkling romcom features both marvellous comic characters and a true romantic heroine, who is transformed through the power of music.

April – May 2017

Puccini's final opera, Turandot, includes music of overwhelming power, including Calaf's celebrated aria 'Nessun Dorma'. Following in the wake of its world-beating Ring cycle, Turandot is the latest in Opera North's acclaimed series of concert stagings of epic operas.
