West End transfer for Kiss Me, Kate

New 2018 dates at the London Coliseum are announced today for Opera North’s award-winning production of Cole Porter’s classic musical comedy, Kiss Me, Kate. Running from 20 - 30 June 2018, it is the first time this hit production has been seen in the West End.

Set both on and off-stage during the production of a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew, Kiss Me, Kate revolves around the tempestuous love lives of actor-manager Fred Graham and his leading lady and ex-wife, Lilli Vanessi. Throw in Fred’s current paramour Lois Lane, her gambler boyfriend Bill – and a couple of gangsters who somehow get caught up in the show – and the stage is set for a funny and farcical battle of the sexes!

A charming homage to the sparkling wit of Shakespeare and an irresistible celebration of the joy and madness of working in theatre, Cole Porter’s witty, jazz-inflected score features hit after hit, with show-stopping numbers including 'Another Op’nin’ Another Show,' 'Brush Up Your Shakespeare,' 'Always True to You in My Fashion' and 'Too Darn Hot.'

Kiss Me, Kate is a real treat of a show, boasting what is probably Cole Porter’s richest, most accomplished theatrical score, brought to life by the talented forces of the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North, and combining the best opera and musical theatre performers. We are thrilled to announce this new transfer to the heart of the West End following two hugely successful runs in the repertoire of Opera North and our co-producers Welsh National Opera.

We are especially pleased during this trip to the capital to be heading to the London Coliseum, a magnificent venue which is the home of our good friends at ENO, and revisiting our roots as – originally – English National Opera North.

— Richard Mantle, General Director, Opera North

Casting will bring together top talent from the worlds of both opera and the West End, with the full-scale Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North bringing the magical sound of Broadway and the golden age of MGM musicals back to life on stage.

This acclaimed production is conducted by James Holmes (Carousel, 2012/2015) and directed by Jo Davies, who is responsible for a string of five-star successes for Opera North, including Ruddigore, Carousel, The Marriage of Figaro and of course, Kiss Me, Kate itself. Sets and costumes are designed by Colin Richmond, while the “sizzling” choreography is by Will Tuckett (Royal Ballet, English National Ballet) whose recent shows include West Side Story (Sage Gateshead) and The Wind in the Willows (ROH and West End transfer).

The London run of Kiss Me, Kate will follow performances at Leeds Grand Theatre, where tickets are already on sale. Tickets for Kiss Me, Kate at London Coliseum in 2018 will be on sale from 10am on Friday 7 April 2017.

Saw this show in Newcastle last year and was literally blown away. From the singing, costumes, dancing and not forgetting the fantastic orchestra - it is a show not to be missed. We enjoyed it so much and couldn't believe it when the final curtain came down - it was such a fast moving show. We are already booked up for Leeds in May 2018........ we will be travelling down from Newcastle and our daughter will be coming up from Derby - so keen are we to repeat the wonderful experience we had on seeing this show. To anyone who hasn't seen this absolutely wonderful show - please - grab yourself a ticket and enjoy one of the best theatre experiences you could wish for.
