Education and Engagement

Opera North Junior Strings

Opera North Junior Strings (ONJS) is an exciting new string orchestra for beginner string players from across Leeds designed to develop outstanding instrumental and musicianship skills in a friendly and supportive environment.

Each week you will be appropriately challenged to develop within your technical ability giving you the chance to make music as an ensemble under the guidance of a member of the Orchestra of Opera North and the Opera North education team.

Meet new people, make new friends and work with world-class musicians – be a part of this unique experience!

  • Who can join ONJS? ONJS is open to young musicians in Year 6 and above (age 10 – 14) who play violin, viola, cello or double bass. ONJS is for beginner level (playing for six months) to Grade 3 instrumentalists, no audition is necessary.  We welcome sign ups throughout the year.
  • When and where do we meet? Every Monday evening (during term time) from 4.15pm to 5.45pm at Opera North Grand Theatre, 46 New Briggate, Leeds, LS1 6NU

The first session will be on Monday 15 January 2018, 4.15pm to 5.45pm
  • How much does It cost? Membership fee is £40 per term, which covers world-class tuition, additional workshops and performances each term. We want to ensure that costs do not create a barrier to taking part and are able to offer financial assistance to those who wouldn’t be able to join without support. Please get in touch to see if you are eligible for a bursary place.
  • Who do I contact if I have questions? Please email or call 0113 223 3557.
  • Interested in joining? We welcome new members in the first few weeks of each school term. Sign up for a free taster session and see if ONJS is for you!
