Arnold, Debussy, Bruch, Mendelssohn

This event has passed.

Garry Walker returns to Huddersfield to open the Kirklees Concert Season with a programme inspired by his homeland.

Scottish landscapes have captured the imaginations of composers throughout Europe for centuries. Based on folk melodies from across the border, and one from poet Robert Burns, Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances feature clever imitations of bagpipes – an instrument synonymous with Scotland and a fitting way to herald the start of the concert.

With its unmistakable Scottish flair, Debussy’s March Écossaise is filled with pastoral variations building to a dramatic conclusion; and a twilight visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel was the spark for Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3.

Having closed the 2016-17 season with a stunning performance of Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, violinist Jack Liebeck returns as soloist on the composer’s first violin concerto, one of the best-loved pieces in the classical repertoire and a former Classic FM Hall of Fame number 1.
