Resonance takes apart the elements of opera and music theatre, and puts them back together in new and surprising ways. Resonance supports artists and independent producers to incubate some of the great performances of the future.
Melanie Wilson is a sound artist, writer and performer. Melanie is interested in the power of voice and movement to create spectacular stage portraits which balance beauty, chaos and violence. She wants to explore the meeting point between abstract sound design, contemporary classical music, spoken and sung voice, and, within that, the choric formulations of voice and movement.
The opera represents an exciting step change in Melanie’s practice as she draws on and develops her experience and artistic interest in creating immersive sonic environments in which music sculpts the temporary world the audience inhabits. The opera will be a piece with and about women. It will re-imagine the world in the future, and women’s place within that, using science fiction as an allegorical technique to reflect on women’s lives today. For example, Melanie is inspired by the work of Margaret Atwood and the films of Andrei Tarkovsky.
