Opera North’s Head of Music David Cowan is joined at the piano by Kathleen Ferrier Award-winning soprano Katherine Broderick for a selection of songs from Germany, France and England on themes of life, love and loss..

Bridging the Romantic and Impressionist eras, Gabriel Fauré composed art songs throughout his long career, and is regarded as one of the masters of the form in French. Richard Strauss’ genius at setting words for the soprano voice was partly inspired by his wife, the singer Pauline de Ahna. In spite of his troubled life and experiences in the trenches during the First World War, Ivor Gurney wrote hundreds of poems and more than 300 songs, among them some of the greatest English art songs of the last century.
