Summer Strings Academy

24 – 27 August 2020

The Opera North Summer Strings Academy is an immersive week of ensemble training where young string players are tutored by and play alongside string players from the Orchestra of Opera North.

This camp focuses on the skills needed for playing in string ensembles and participants will spend the week playing exciting repertoire and discovering the special relationships between instruments within the string family. Everyone will be appropriately challenged to develop within their technical and musical ability in an inspirational and supportive environment.

Participants will be part of two ensembles – a large string ensemble, and a smaller ensemble such as a quartet or trio. Players will participate in creative composition workshops as well as strings specific masterclasses which give the opportunity for peer and professional feedback, as well as exploring specific string techniques.

Participants will be placed into a group of no more than 15 young musicians and accompanying orchestra members with whom they will remain for all sessions. Read our Covid Safety Measures.

Each day players will:

  • Explore the world of repertoire for string ensembles with the professionals of the Orchestra of Opera North.
  • Rehearse and perform as a string orchestra and a quartet or trio.
  • Learn, experiment and develop improvisation and composition skills by creating a new work for your string ensemble.
  • Have the opportunity to perform a piece for constructive feedback from peers and Opera North Musicians.
  • Take part in masterclasses on specific string techniques.
  • Play side by side with musicians of the Orchestra of Opera North.
  • Meet new people and make new friends.

We welcome musicians aged 10 – 17 studying Grade 4+ or equivalent on their string instrument to take part. Places are strictly limited in accordance to government guidance.
