Orchestra of Opera North: Distant Shores

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Ben Gernon, Conductor
Kathryn Rudge, Mezzo-soprano

With our second foray into the symphonic works of Antonin Dvořák, Ben Gernon, former Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, makes his Opera North debut with the 8th Symphony, a work with a bright and optimistic feel, unlike many of Dvořák's other compositions.

The programme also includes Mozart's much-loved Symphony No. 31, 'Paris' before we introduce our guest vocalist for the evening, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Kathryn Rudge. Elgar's Sea Pictures, a setting of five poems set to music for mezzo-soprano, were premiered in 1899 by Clara Butt dressed as a mermaid! We don't anticipate that Kathryn Rudge will appear in the same guise, but she is sure to enchant either way.

Talking Music begins at 3.10pm

Mozart Symphony No. 31 in D major, 'Paris' K.297/300a
Elgar Sea Pictures Op. 37
Dvořák Symphony No. 8 in G major

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Dalia Stasevska, Conductor
Sofya Gulyak, Piano

To celebrate the Bernstein centenary, we close this year's Kirklees Concert Season with a concert of American music, including his iconic Symphonic Dances from the ground-breaking, award-winning musical West Side Story

Gershwin's epic Rhapsody in Blue needs no introduction; it serves to fuse jazz and classical elements showcasing the versatility of the Orchestra, soloist Sofya Gulyak (2009 Leeds International Piano Competition winner) and Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska. John Adam's The Chairman Dances follows. Taken from his opera Nixon in China, the piece is also known as Foxtrot for Orchestra and it's easy to understand why given its rhythmic drive. The concert concludes with Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances. Written while he was in New York, this colourful composition is a wonderful way to mark the close of this year's Kirklees Concert Season.

The star of the evening was conductor Dalia Stasevska
