Orchestra of Opera North: Exotic Homelands

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Garry Walker, Conductor
Elena Urioste, Violin

Garry Walker returns to Opera North after his critically acclaimed performances of Britten's Billy Budd. From the arresting opening of the Soirées musicales through to the noble ending of Elgar's First Symphony, a common thread of stylistic experimentation — sometimes playful, sometimes audacious — unites the works of three markedly different composers.

Elena Urioste, former BBC New Generation Artist and yoga fanatic, is a seasoned recitalist and concerto performer, working with numerous American and UK orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, BBC Symphony and Hallé Orchestras. Here she takes centre-stage to perform Mozart's exquisite Violin Concerto No. 5.

Opera North's... superb orchestra... delivered a brilliantly vivid, sharply etched account under conductor Garry Walker, full of surging drama and also moments of ezquisite contemplation

Orchestra of Opera North: The Snowman & Cinderella

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Hugh Brunt, Conductor
John Savournin, Narrator

Arguably the most cherished soundtrack to the Christmas season is the score to Raymond Brigg's The Snowman. This December the Orchestra of Opera North performs the music in all its heart-melting splendour to a live screening of the animation. Sure to captivate the imaginations of young and old alike, this is not only the perfect way to spend time with loved ones, but a wonderful introduction to the thrills, chills and power of a symphony orchestra performing live.

Before that, narrator John Savournin delights with the classic rags-to-riches tale of Cinderella with sensational music and illustrations to accompany the story.

Brunt’s conducting of every bar, from the opening buzzing bass line to the sudden consonant end assertive, was graceful, just like the music. Wonderful.

Adrian Leaper, Conductor
Chorus of Opera North

The annual Christmas concert in Dewsbury is a sparkling showcase for Opera North's different ensembles. With a programme designed to feature its Chorus, Children's and Youth Choruses, all underpinned by the exceptional Orchestra, you'll be inspired to join in with the audience carols in a concert that will certainly get you into the festive spirit.

Having brought the curtain down on the last Kirklees Concert Season with an unforgettable programme of Sibelius, Bruch and Strauss, Adrian Leaper returns to conduct the massed forces. Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Tobias Ringborg, Conductor
Ian Buckle, Piano
Andrew Collins, Presenter

Andrew Collins (Classic FM presenter and Film Editor at Radio Times) guides us through the world of Hollywood film music with help from Tobias Ringborg, Ian Buckle and the Orchestra of Opera North.

With classic scores from Korngold, Williams, and Rota and lesser known gems from Addinsell, Provost and Webb this is a concert where you're bound to know the tunes even if the names are unfamiliar.

Cementing the links between Classic FM, the Kirklees Concert Season and Opera North, there is no better way to celebrate the breadth of music that movies have inspired.

Korngold The Adventures of Robin Hood
Rózsa Thief of Bagdad: Eternal love
Steiner Gone with the Wind
Provost Intermezzo: Souvenir de Vienne
Webb Notorious
Herrmann North by Northwest
Chaplin Limelight
Korngold Sea Hawk
Korngold Kings Row
John Williams Star Wars
John Williams Schindler’s List: Theme
Addinsell Dangerous Moonlight: Warsaw Concerto
Rota The Godfather
John Williams Superman

There was no doubting the conductor's living and breathing the music. His enthusiasm was infectious; the orchestra's vivid response... was not the least of the evening's special qualities

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Ben Gernon, Conductor
Kathryn Rudge, Mezzo-soprano

With our second foray into the symphonic works of Antonin Dvořák, Ben Gernon, former Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, makes his Opera North debut with the 8th Symphony, a work with a bright and optimistic feel, unlike many of Dvořák's other compositions.

The programme also includes Mozart's much-loved Symphony No. 31, 'Paris' before we introduce our guest vocalist for the evening, BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Kathryn Rudge. Elgar's Sea Pictures, a setting of five poems set to music for mezzo-soprano, were premiered in 1899 by Clara Butt dressed as a mermaid! We don't anticipate that Kathryn Rudge will appear in the same guise, but she is sure to enchant either way.

Talking Music begins at 3.10pm

Mozart Symphony No. 31 in D major, 'Paris' K.297/300a

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2017-18

Dalia Stasevska, Conductor
Sofya Gulyak, Piano

To celebrate the Bernstein centenary, we close this year's Kirklees Concert Season with a concert of American music, including his iconic Symphonic Dances from the ground-breaking, award-winning musical West Side Story

Gershwin's epic Rhapsody in Blue needs no introduction; it serves to fuse jazz and classical elements showcasing the versatility of the Orchestra, soloist Sofya Gulyak (2009 Leeds International Piano Competition winner) and Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska. John Adam's The Chairman Dances follows. Taken from his opera Nixon in China, the piece is also known as Foxtrot for Orchestra and it's easy to understand why given its rhythmic drive. The concert concludes with Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances. Written while he was in New York, this colourful composition is a wonderful way to mark the close of this year's Kirklees Concert Season.

The star of the evening was conductor Dalia Stasevska
