Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2018/2019
Arnold, Debussy, Bruch, Mendelssohn

Conductor, Garry Walker
Violin, Jack Liebeck

Garry Walker returns to Huddersfield to open the Kirklees Concert Season with a programme inspired by his homeland.

Scottish landscapes have captured the imaginations of composers throughout Europe for centuries. Based on folk melodies from across the border, and one from poet Robert Burns, Arnold’s Four Scottish Dances feature clever imitations of bagpipes – an instrument synonymous with Scotland and a fitting way to herald the start of the concert.

With its unmistakable Scottish flair, Debussy’s March Écossaise is filled with pastoral variations building to a dramatic conclusion; and a twilight visit to the ruins of Holyrood Chapel was the spark for Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3

Having closed the 2016-17 season with a stunning performance of Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, violinist Jack Liebeck returns as soloist on the composer’s first violin concerto, one of the best-loved pieces in the classical repertoire and a former Classic FM Hall of Fame number 1.

Talking Music begins at 6.40pm

Arnold Four Scottish Dances
Op. 59
Debussy Marche Écossaise sur un thème populaire
(Scottish March on a Popular Theme)

For this commemorative concert screening, we’re pleased to welcome conductor Carl Davis CBE to the podium to conduct his own score for this landmark film.

Former Music Director of Opera North, Richard Farnes returns to the helm of the Orchestra to present the world premiere of Will Todd’s Songs of Love and Battle

Dedicated to Opera North’s youth ensembles, Todd’s commission is a micro opera depicting the conflicting emotions of war through the words and poems of Maggie Gottlieb.

Renowned for their melodic intensity and harmonic invention, Todd’s best-known works include Mass in Blue, The Blackened Man and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Górecki’s third symphony, known as his ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’, picks up the theme of loss and separation caused by conflict through three Polish texts. The second text, a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, is arguably one of the most famous pieces of music from the late 20th Century.

Orchestra of Opera North: Music of Consequence

Synopsis

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season 2018/2019
Wagner, Ravel and Shostakovich

Conductor, Christoph Altstaedt
Piano, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet

Few pieces demonstrate the effects of war more starkly than Ravel’s Piano Concerto in D major, written for the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I.

This extraordinary work will be performed by award-winning French pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, a renowned exponent of Ravel’s music who makes his Kirklees debut alongside conductor Christoph Altstaedt.

Sandwiching the concerto are Shostakovich’s 15th and final symphony, and Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde. Shostakovich’s 15th is a profound piece where nothing is quite as it seems. Quotations from other musical works litter the symphony, none more poignantly than the leitmotif from Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde.

Talking Music begins at 6.40pm

Wagner Tristan and Isolde: Prelude and Liebestod
