Hack-Poets Guild: Blackletter Garland

Friday 17 March 2023

This event has passed.

A vivid new album project and UK tour sees three of the UK’s most innovative, award-winning folk artists, Lisa Knapp, Marry Waterson and Nathaniel Mann, reinvent a collection of historic broadsides.

Arguably the forerunners of our modern news media, broadsides (also known as a broadsheet) often contained ballads and rhymes, which were sung daily in Britain’s streets and inns. These intricate tales of folklore, birth, love, conflict and death offer a rare and fascinating insight into Britain’s history.

Delving into the inky archives at the Bodleian Libraries and beyond, Knapp, Waterson and Mann lead a five-piece band performing new arrangements and original material, bringing broadsides to life for a new generation.

The evening starts with an 18 minute pre-concert talk about Broadside Ballads and the history of printing filmed at the Bodleian Library between Lisa Knapp and broadsides expert Steve Roud.

There’ll also be an opportunity to use the Book Beetle Press, at the first public outing of this small portable letterpress in Leeds. Demonstrations will be given before, during and after the show courtesy of Leeds University’s Centre for the Comparative History of Print and you can have a go at printing your own broadside memento.
