Children's Chorus Summer Show: All Summer in a Day

Saturday 21 June 2025

This event has passed.

In the relentless rain of Venus, where the sun shines for only once every seven years, a classroom of children awaits a moment of light and wonder. But when envy clouds their hearts, a single cruel act casts a shadow far deeper than the weather outside.

Commissioned by Opera North in 1998, All Summer in a Day is a moving adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s classic short story, composed by Alec Roth. Featuring a cast of young performers from Opera North’s Children’s Chorus, this opera explores themes of empathy, isolation, and the fleeting nature of beauty through music that is both accessible and evocative.

Alec Roth’s score brings the alien world of Venus to life, weaving together melody, texture, and silence to reflect the inner landscapes of its young characters. With a libretto that remains true to Bradbury’s poignant prose, this opera invites audiences of all ages to reflect on the power of kindness—and the cost of forgetting it.
