Programme

Bruch String Octet in B Op. Post
Schumann Piano Quintet

Bruch’s Octet was his last work, completed only months before his death in 1920. Despite this, it is very much in the German Romantic tradition, with few concessions to twentieth century trends.

It was modelled on Mendelssohn’s String Octet, with a double bass taking the place of the second cello for extra resonance. Composed during his incredibly productive “Chamber Music Year”, Schumann’s Piano Quintet was dedicated to his wife, Clara, who praised it as “splendid, full of vigour and freshness” – a judgement that still holds true today.
