The Orchestra of Opera North

The Orchestra of Opera North, part of Classic FM’s Opera Company, holds a unique place amongst British orchestras. Universally praised by audiences and critics alike, the orchestra is the only ensemble in the country to have a year-round dual role in the opera house and concert hall.

Revelling in its universal acclaim for the Company's presentation of six cycles of Wagner's mammoth opus – the Ring cycle ("...Opera North’s orchestra are the true heroes" — The Guardian on Die Walküre), where the Orchestra was central to the production and performed to packed houses across the country, the Orchestra begins its 16/17 season under the baton of Opera North’s new Music Director, Aleksandar Markovic.

The Orchestra of Opera North plays a significant part in the major concert series of the region appearing with numerous international guest conductors and soloists. Since the turn of the century, Opera North has been working with Kirklees Council to curate a ground-breaking collaboration which has resulted in the Kirklees Concert Season based in Huddersfield and Dewsbury Town Halls. This work, now in its 14th season, was nominated for the 2006 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards.

Important relationships with Leeds International Concert Season and Leeds Town Hall see the Orchestra performing regular concerts of major symphonic repertoire, gala concerts and collaborating with the region’s choral societies. It is the resident orchestra for the Leeds Conductors Competition and plays in Leeds University’s International Concert Season annually.

A strong commitment to educational and community projects is a feature of the work of the orchestra, in collaboration with Opera North Education and is a growing feature of the work of the ensemble to complement its operatic and symphonic work to increase accessibility and encourage new audiences and the musicians of tomorrow.

The Orchestra has received international recognition for its recordings of music by Walton, Delius and Vaughan Williams and more recently has recorded the complete works for piano and orchestra by Beethoven with Howard Shelley as soloist/director for Chandos, which received universal praise from critics.
