Audio-Described Performances

As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and the government’s advice regarding social gatherings and live performance, we are very sorry to announce the postponement of our Autumn 2020 and Winter 2021 seasons. Ticket holders will be contacted directly. Read the full statement or see our FAQs for details.

Audio-described performances include a live description of the visual elements of the production delivered through a discreet headset. This information is minimal and carefully timed so that it does not detract from the music.

Opera North’s audio-described performances include a pre-show touch tour where blind and visually impaired audience members are allowed access to the stage to touch/get a closer look at the sets and costumes. Places for the touch tour are free but must be booked in advance.

In addition to this, an introduction to the visual aspects of the production is sent to all bookers one week prior to the show as an MP3 or CD (please specify at the time of booking). This information is repeated through the headsets 15 minutes before the start of the performance. Large print casts lists are also available on the night, and in braille on request in advance.

Customers booking for the audio description may be eligible for discounts in some venues so please contact the box office in your chosen venue.  You can also then book on the touch tour and reserve a headset.
