Listen to a selection of music inspired by animals, create your own jungle dance and make a dancing crocodile out of empty egg boxes to accompany you!

From singing birds to large elephants, animals have long been a source of inspiration for composers.

Moving through the jungle

Have you watched Disney’s The Jungle Book? It is full of wonderful tunes and rhythms which accompany the amusing adventures of Mowgli and the sympathetic animals of the jungle. Have a listen!

Can you make up your own jungle dance to go with the music? You could try lots of different animal movements to add to your dance! You could slither like a snake, snap like a crocodile, stomp like an elephant or swing around like a monkey.

Create a crocodile

Why not have a go at making your own crocodile to dance with? To do this, you will need:

  • Empty eggs boxes
  • Paint
  • Carboard
  • Glue
  • Tape

Have a look at this tutorial…

We would love to see your crocodile and jungle dance moves. You can share pictures and video using #ONLittleSchool on social media.

Guess the animal

Have a listen to this piece of music about an animal. See if a grown up can put on the music on for you for 1 minute (without showing you the screen!).

Can you guess what type of jungle animal this music is all about?
Can you draw a picture of that animal?

Did you get it right?

This piece of music is taken from the Carnival of the Animals by a French composer called Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921). If you carry on listening for a bit longer, you will be able to hear a lot of other animals too!

Listening for animals

Here are some other pieces of music written about animals. We might find these animals in the park, or the garden or under the sea! Have a listen and see what animals you can hear…

  • ‘Musique d’insectes’ (insects’ music) from the opera L’enfant et les Sortilèges by Maurice Ravel performed by the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North.
