Leonard Bernstein's satire on the American Dream
Part of The Little Greats

In 1950s suburbia, Sam and Dinah appear to have the perfect life in their little white house. But their growing detachment exposes a mutual feeling that they are trapped in a life that has turned into a lie. Sam escapes to the hyper-masculine, win-or-lose world of work and the gym, while Dinah loses herself in the movies, where the hit picture of the day is the ominously-titled Trouble in Tahiti.

A jazz trio provides an ironic gloss on the story, pointing up the stark contrast between the unreal fantasy of domestic bliss peddled by the ad-men and the painful truth of Sam and Dinah’s lives.

Bernstein’s score for his deeply touching first opera is heavily influenced by the syncopated rhythms of jazz and by the distinctive American vernacular of Hollywood and Broadway.

A toe-tapping Jazz Trio sings of the perfection of middle-class life in 1950s suburbia, as married couple Sam and Dinah bicker over breakfast. Dinah accuses her husband of having an affair with his secretary, which he denies. Dinah reminds Sam about the school play which their son, Junior, is appearing in that afternoon, but Sam insists that the handball tournament at his gym is more important.

Dinah shares a dream with her analyst about a beautiful, harmonious, but unattainable garden. Sam is still at the office, telling his secretary to forget about an earlier incident which occurred between them. Sam and Dinah bump into each other accidentally but agree not to join each other for lunch. When apart, they yearn for their lost happiness.

Sam wins his handball tournament and celebrates being one of life's born winners. Meanwhile, Dinah has been watching a romantic film called 'Trouble in Tahiti'. She knows it is sentimental escapism, but is still caught up in its depiction of love. Sam reluctantly returns home. Both have missed Junior's play.

After dinner, Sam and Dinah attempt to discuss their relationship, but it descends into another argument. To avoid further confrontation, Sam suggests going to the movies to watch a new film, 'Trouble in Tahiti' – the one Dinah has already seen – and Dinah accepts. Life goes on...
