Orchestra of Opera North: Beethoven's Fifth

This event has passed.

Programme

Beethoven Overture: Leonore No. 3
Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4
Beethoven Symphony No. 5

Having made an acclaimed recording of all of Beethoven’s works for piano and orchestra with the Orchestra of Opera North, who better to conduct our belated celebration of Beethoven than Howard Shelley?

This Beethoven extravaganza features Leonore No. 3, one of the four overtures Beethoven wrote for his only opera, Fidelio, a condensed epic that encapsulates the opera’s thrilling exploits. The Fourth Piano Concerto features a gripping tussle between soloist and orchestra that some have taken to symbolise Beethoven’s own struggles with his inner demons.

His iconic Fifth Symphony is a heroic journey from darkness to light: its distinctive opening motif “da-da-da-daa” frequently appears in popular culture, from Disney’s Fantasia 2000 to Doctor Who!
