Mahler & Strauss

Kirklees Orchestral Series

Thursday 11 April 2024

This event has passed.

Nigerian-American soprano Francesca Chiejina joins the Orchestra for Strauss’ beautiful musical farewell, the Four Last Songs.

Demonstrating his unparalleled ability to bring together orchestral sound and song, the soaring vocal lines and prominent horn parts reference Strauss’ own life: his wife was a famous soprano and his father a professional horn player. Garry Walker conducts a seismic symphony to close the season.

Sure to send shivers down your spine, Mahler’s First Symphony depicts life, death and nature, from the awakening of spring complete with cuckoo calls in the first movement to a funeral march in the forest in the third movement, to the rousing, life-affirming finale.

Part of the Kirklees Concert Season.
