Opera North Young Creatives aims to develop young people, aged 8–14, as performers and creative thinkers through musicianship, stage craft and performing.

Through a series of weekly sessions across two terms, the group will work with specialist artistic leaders to create performance pieces inspired by Opera North’s main stage productions. Participants will have the opportunity to work with an experienced vocal leader, director and specialised guest artists to develop skills in stagecraft, musicianship, singing and performing.

Membership fee is £65 per project.

The Young Creatives YOUR_Street Scene project is a co-production with Theatre Magdeburg and the young people they work with.

The young people in Magdeburg will be creating their own filmed Street Scene, which we hope our Young Creatives participants will be able to see! See the trailer here…

Opera North Young Creatives in...

When do we meet?
Project One – Thursday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle.  Sessions run weekly from Thursday 19 September 2019 – Thursday 24 October 2019 with a workshop and performance on Saturday 2 November.

Project Two –Thursday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle. Sessions run weekly from Thursday 7 November 2019 – Thursday 27 February 2020 (no sessions during the Christmas break) with a weekend workshop in February 2020, and sharing in March 2020.

How much does it cost?
Membership fee is £65 per project.

What will the sessions cover?
Sessions in Project One will look at lullabies from across the world, inspired by songs from northern based refugees, linking with the theme of displacement in Martinů’s opera, The Greek Passion.

Sessions in Project Two will take inspiration from Kurt Weill’s Opera, Street Scene, which is an exciting fusion of traditional European opera and American musical theatre. The group will create and sing new vocal music, as well as staging and filming a street scene in Newcastle with a director.

When do we meet?
Free taster sessions will be held on Friday 18 October, Friday 25 October and Friday 1 November.

Project One – Friday evenings from 5.30pm to 7.00pm at the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall, Nottingham.  Sessions run weekly from Friday 8 November 2019 – Friday 6 December 2019.

Project Two – Friday evenings from 5.30pm to 7.00pm at the Theatre Royal and Concert Hall, Nottingham. Sessions run weekly from Friday 31 January 2020 – Friday 20 March 2020 with a weekend workshop and sharing in March 2020.

What will the sessions cover?
Sessions in both Project One and Two will take inspiration from Kurt Weill’s Opera, Street Scene, which is an exciting fusion of traditional European opera and American musical theatre. Over the two projects, Young Creatives will have the chance to explore multiple aspects of opera and its themes while developing new creative skills. The group will create and sing new vocal music, as well as staging and filming a street scene in Nottingham with a director.
