Submotion Orchestra

Submotion Orchestra return to Leeds for a special, one-off performance to celebrate the release of their Unplugged Vol.ii EP, featuring The Prism String Ensemble, alongside the live band.

Formed in Leeds in 2009, the genre-defying Submotion Orchestra have moved seamlessly between deep electronica, jazz, soul and ambient downtempo, mesmerising audiences wherever they go. 

Across five albums, earth-shaking bass and drums have combined with lush keyboard and trumpet textures to create a backdrop for Ruby Wood’s beautifully fragile vocals, and celestial effects. From the very beginning this has earned them heated enthusiasm from fans and critics alike for their cross-genre appeal. 

Now, to mark their second EP of acoustic reworkings of their back catalogue, they expand their lineup with a specially-formed string quartet for this one-time tour. Performing tracks from across their career, the band transport their bass-heavy and soulful sound to intimate sit-down venues.

Support from Matthew Bourne. Renowned for his intensely personal solo work, Bourne’s uncanny ability to balance delicacy and virtuosity while establishing a close affinity with his audience have become hallmarks of his performances.

Winner of both a Perrier Jazz Award and a BBC Radio Jazz Award, he has worked with the London Sinfonietta, John Zorn, Nils Frahm, Amon Tobin and the late Keith Tippett. Other projects include Radioland, a live reworking of Kraftwerk’s Radio-Activity album with Franck Vigroux and Antoine Schmitt and solo synthesiser album moogmemory. He performed the premiere of his score for King Vidor’s film The Crowd in the Howard Assembly Room for Leeds International Film Festival 2021.
