Trainee Choral Animateur

 

Opera North is looking for an early career artist with some experience of leading singing activities for young people to work on their Family Choir project from September 2009 until June 2010.

The project will work with students from two primary schools and a secondary school in Leeds and their parents. The successful applicant will be a key member of the Family Choir artistic team, working closely with the lead artist to develop and deliver the work.

The trainee will be expected to lead workshops without the lead artist following a training period of four months.  A bursary of £400 will be paid for the first four months (September – December 2009).  Following this, the trainee will lead the family choir at one of the schools and will be paid £60 per session, plus a planning fee and travel payment if travelling from outside of Leeds.

Play ON The Orchestra of Opera North in Residence


Trainee Position

During the 09-10 academic year, the Orchestra of Opera North will be working with pupils at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds to inspire and develop their interest in orchestral music.

Opera North is looking for an early career musician / composer who is keen to work alongside a professional team to develop their music leadership skills. The successful applicant will be a key member of the Play ON artistic team, working closely with lead artist and members of the Orchestra of Opera North to deliver an inspiring programme of work.

The trainee would be expected to fulfil the following duties:
•    Attend all necessary planning sessions
•    Attend all workshop sessions
•    Work alongside and support the lead artist, musicians and participants during workshops
•    Take an active role in all aspects of the workshops as appropriate
•    Build workshop skills and techniques through active observation/participation in sessions
•    Take an active role in breakout sessions with smaller groups
•    Be proactive about helping to raise the young people’s awareness about orchestral instruments and orchestral music
•    Participate in the evaluation
•    Commit to monitoring and reflecting on your own learning and development

Applicants will need to commit to attending all workshops (12 days contact time) and a maximum of 3 half day planning sessions (3hrs per session).

Opera North is able to offer a travel bursary of up to £185 to cover travel and expenses. All workshops will take place at Corpus Christi Catholic College, Leeds. Planning meetings will take place at the school or at Opera North by prior arrangement.

This brand new chamber opera by Jonathan Dove and Alasdair Middleton (The Adventures of Pinocchio 2008), based on the Finnish folk tale, Kalevala, is designed for a family audience and produced by the Education department.

Previous experience as DSM is essential, along with the ability to read a piano/vocal score to a good standard.

OPUS1 Trainee Artist Positions


During October half term, from 26-30 October 09, Opera North will be running an exciting new project called OPUS1. 

OPUS1 is a week long project for 8-11 year olds who will try out new arts activities and develop their existing skills. Young people from across Leeds will explore a variety of art forms with professional artists and will share their work at the end of the week with an audience of friends and family.

Opera North is looking for two trainees to take part in the OPUS1 project and work alongside the professional artists to develop their workshop leading skills. The successful applicants will be key members of the OPUS1 team, working closely with all artists and helping to plan and deliver the week. 

The trainees would be expected to fulfil the following duties:
•    Attend one half day planning session
•    Attend all workshop sessions (10am-3pm each day)
•    Work alongside and support the artists leading the project
•    Take an active role in all aspects of the workshops as appropriate
•    Build workshop skills and techniques through active observation/participation in sessions
•    Be proactive about helping to develop young people’s interests in the various art forms that are part of creating musical theatre and opera 

Opera North is able to offer a bursary of £125 to cover travel and expenses.  All workshops will take place at The Grand Theatre, Leeds

 OPUS 2 & OPUS3 Trainee Artist Positions


Opera North is offering two trainee artists the opportunity to work alongside experienced animateurs on its OPUS out of school projects. OPUS2 is a project for 11-14 year olds and OPUS3 is for 14-18 year olds.

Participants in OPUS2 and OPUS3 receive free tickets to attend a wide range of music and arts performances, meet weekly on a Monday for workshop sessions with professional artists to explore what they have seen and create new performance works of their own.

The trainee scheme will run from October 2009-March 2010. The successful applicants will be key members of the artistic team for each project, working closely with a composer and director to explore and create diverse art works with young people. The scheme will enable the Trainee to develop workshop skills and confidence, with the opportunity to lead sections of work as the project develops. The Trainee will be mentored by the project’s lead artist and supported by Opera North Education staff.

There is one trainee position available for the OPUS2 project and one for the OPUS3 project.

The trainee would be expected to fulfil the following duties:
•    Attend three taster sessions on Monday 12, 19 and 26 October
•    Attend all workshop sessions on Mondays from November 2009 to March 2010 (OPUS2: 4.30-6pm, OPUS3: 6.30-8.30pm)
•    Work alongside and support the artists leading the project
•    Take an active role in all aspects of the workshops as appropriate
•    Build workshop skills and techniques through active observation/participation in sessions
•    Be proactive about helping to develop young people’s interest in a variety of art forms 
•    Attend theatre/gallery visits with the group where possible
•    Attend planning sessions when possible

For each trainee, Opera North can offer a bursary of £650 to cover attendance at sessions, travel and expenses.  All workshops will take place in Leeds.
