2016/17 New Season Announcement

Opera North is delighted to announce upcoming mainstage work for 2016/17, with six brand new productions including Britten’s masterly Billy Budd and Rimsky-Korsakov’s delightful and rarely performed The Snow Maiden.

The season launches in September 2016 as Aleksandar Markovic conducts his first production as Opera North’s new Music Director. Der Rosenkavalier, in a production noted for its sumptuous period staging, is perfectly poised between comedy and pathos, and gives glorious expression to Strauss’s adoration of the soprano voice.

Experience the essence of vintage Puccini in concentrated form, in a double-bill of two of his short operas from Il trittico. Soprano Anne Sophie Duprels takes the title role in a new production of Puccini’s heart-rending Suor Angelica, paired with a revival of the noir-ish thriller Il tabarro, originally staged as part of Opera North’s innovative ‘Eight Little Greats’ series.

Completing the Autumn line-up is Opera North’s first new production of Benjamin Britten’s haunting and compelling Billy Budd in more than 20 years, with a cast of leading Britten interpreters headed by Roderick Williams as Billy and Alan Oke as Captain Vere.

A trio of three new productions for Winter contrast worlds of fantasy and reality, starting with John Fulljames’ production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snow Maiden, a rarely-staged opera of sheer enchantment, graced with some of the composer’s richest and most lyrical music.

Soprano Susan Bullock takes the formidable dual role of the Witch and Mother in Hansel and Gretel, perhaps the best-loved of all of the operatic fairy tales. Edward Dick’s new production promises to delve into the darker side of the story, where childhood innocence meets the psychological dangers of the adult world.

Aletta Collins directs one of Rossini’s most charming confections, Cinderella (La Cenerentola), in a production with dance woven into its very heart. Two rising international stars make their UK debuts, with South African tenor Sunnyboy Dladla as Don Ramiro and Canadian mezzo Wallis Giunta as Angelina.

Concluding the season, Puccini’s overwhelmingly powerful final opera, Turandot, is conducted by Music Director Aleksandar Markovic in a new concert staging, with Rafael Rojas, most recently seen at Opera North in the title role of Andrea Chénier, as Calaf, and Orla Boylan as Turandot.
