Mali’s musical storyteller Afel Bocoum brings the soulful sounds of the Niger River to life, celebrating traditional Malian music and cultural heritage.
Afel Bocoum is a revered musician who has been a guardian of Mali’s rich musical heritage for over three decades. A longtime musical companion of the legendary Ali Farka Touré, Bocoum has established himself as a pivotal figure in traditional Malian music, preserving the region’s profound musical storytelling.
Hailing from Niafunke on the River Niger, Bocoum is now touring as a trio, featuring Ali Bounaly Traoré on solo guitar and Mahalmadane Bountel Traoré on percussion. Their performance strips music to its core – voice, rhythm, and the spaces between – creating a deeply authentic sound rooted in their shared Songhoy heritage. Preparing to release his new album Harber, Bocoum continues to be an ambassador for endangered traditional instruments like the njarka fiddle and njurkle lute.
This performance promises an authentic journey into the heart of Malian musical tradition, showcasing Bocoum’s commitment to storytelling and cultural preservation. Audiences at the Howard Assembly Room will experience these rare instruments brought to life by a true master.
