FILMusic: The Crowd

with live score from Matthew Bourne

Thursday 11 November 2021

This event has passed.

The silent era’s last great masterpiece, with a haunting new score written and performed live by exploratory jazz pianist Matthew Bourne.

Combining awe-inspiring camerawork with a thrilling, often tender realism that would influence the great postwar directors, King Vidor’s pioneering film follows John and his wife Mary as they struggle against the dehumanising effects of ordinary life in the city, and strive to set themselves apart from the crowd.

Renowned for his intensely personal solo work, Matthew Bourne’s uncanny ability to balance delicacy and virtuosity while establishing a close affinity with his audience have become hallmarks of his performances. Winner of both a Perrier Jazz Award and a BBC Radio Jazz Award, he has worked with the London Sinfonietta, John Zorn, Nils Frahm, Amon Tobin and the late Keith Tippett. Other projects include Radioland, a live reworking of Kraftwerk’s Radio-Activity album with Franck Vigroux and Antoine Schmitt and solo synthesiser album moogmemory.

Commissioned and produced by Opera North as part of Leeds International Film Festival.
