Swedish songwriter Jens Lekman presents an intimate musical journey exploring love, weddings, and the stories we tell through song.
Jens Lekman is a singular storyteller whose music blends intimate songwriting with innovative narrative techniques. His latest project, Songs for Other People’s Weddings, is a unique musical and literary collaboration with novelist David Levithan that explores love, connection, and the transformative power of music.
Emerging from Gothenburg, Sweden, Lekman has carved out a distinctive musical approach that turns personal observations into deeply affecting musical experiences. What began as a playful offer to sing at weddings in his 2004 track If You Ever Need a Stranger (To Sing at Your Wedding) has evolved into a profound exploration of human relationships, with Lekman serving as both observer and participant in the intimate moments of strangers’ lives.
This performance promises to be a rich, multilayered experience that weaves together music, storytelling, and emotional landscape. Audiences can expect a musical journey that moves through various styles, reflecting the complex emotions of love, separation, and connection.
“In this era of streaming, music has become like a scented candle. And singing at weddings is reversing that for me. I began playing weddings because I just thought it was a fun, weird thing to do. And then I realised that these moments were the most important point in these people’s lives. You’re not the reason people are there. Your job is to be a midwife, delivering these people into the next phase of their lives. It was that connection that I was searching for.”
