The breathtaking, emotionally-charged soundworld of one of today’s most remarkable artists meets the intensely expressionistic universe of a landmark of early cinema.
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter, composer and producer Julia Holter performs her new soundtrack for the revelatory 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, scored for the mighty 36-strong Chorus of Opera North, plus her own band.
Over the course of her five studio albums Holter has pushed into astonishing and beautiful new territories with her experiments with vocals, song-writing and musical structure. Commissioned by Opera North Projects to score Carl Theodor Dreyer’s visionary film about the martyrdom of the French saint, she finds herself with an immense sonic tapestry at her fingertips, and an opportunity to dig deeper into her fascination with the music and art of the medieval era.
