Join us for one of the first live performances in our newly refurbished Howard Assembly Room.

LYR (Land Yacht Regatta) sets the spoken word of Poet Laureate Simon Armitage to intense, atmospheric musical arrangements by Richard Walters and Patrick Pearson.

For debut album Call in the Crash Team (2020), Armitage brings his trademark evocative and accessible lyrics, each song written from the point of view of a fictional character having some form of personal crisis.

Walters and Pearson’s haunting, perfectly matched pianos, strings, guitars, and electronics are reminiscent of the post-rock sounds of Sigur Rós and Radiohead.

Opening the show, former Dancing Years lead singer David Henshaw’s solo project Anew Day brings heartfelt acoustic balladry that’s been compared to Bon Iver, Damien Rice and Glen Hansard.

“Compelling” ★★★★ — The Telegraph

★★★★ — The Scotsman

“An extraordinary work” — The Independent

“Sad and very beautiful and full of the tiny details that make Armitage’s poetry so affecting” — Evening Standard
