Opera North Children's Chorus (ages 8–11)

Term Time

This event has passed.

COVID-19 Update: Following government advice, please note rehearsals will be taking place remotely until further notice.

The Opera North Children’s Chorus (ONCC) provides boys and girls aged 8–11 with exciting opportunities to further their musical education and talent through the support of a professional opera company.

Expert training and guidance provided through weekly rehearsals enables children to develop outstanding vocal technique and musicianship skills whilst making new friends and developing a life-long love of singing. Members also work with professional directors and movement specialists to develop skills in drama and stagecraft.

The Children’s Chorus perform throughout the year both locally and nationally alongside professionals such as the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North. Previous performances included ‘Myth and Legends’ at the Southbank Centre, ‘Songs of Love and Battle’ at Leeds and Huddersfield Town Hall and ‘Don’t Call a Dragon a Worm!’ at the Georgian Theatre Royal in Richmond. Repertoire includes both secular and sacred music from a variety of genres, with a particular focus on classical music/opera.

Members of the Children’s Chorus are regularly invited to audition for mainstage productions.

Entry is by audition, but we are looking for potential and welcome singers of all levels of experience. We offer financial assistance to ensure that costs do not create a barrier to taking part.

Opera North Children's Chorus 2020 / 21

The upcoming theme for Opera North Children’s Chorus will look at different cultures and music, and at what makes people feel more connected when they are locked down and isolated.

The accompanying artists will be singer/songwriter Christella Litras and director Gitika Buttoo. Christella is a singer/songwriter who spent 10 years based in Trinidad and has a strong interest in African/Caribbean music and its connection to hip hop and reggae. She was part of Opera North’s Resonance residency programme in 2018, and has just finished a project with Leeds Playhouse. Gitika is a British Indian Theatre Director from Yorkshire. She won the JMK Trust Bursary 2017 and has worked with Leeds Playhouse, The Octagon Theatre, Birmingham Opera Company, CAST and the National Theatre.
