COVID-19 Update: Following government advice, please note rehearsals will be taking place remotely until further notice.

The Opera North Young Voices (ONYV) offers a perfect transition between the Children’s Chorus and the Youth Chorus and continues to provide expert training to enable young people to perfect their vocal technique and musicianship skills.

Members receive training and guidance from experienced choral leaders and have the opportunity to work with professional directors and movement specialists to develop skills in drama and stagecraft.

There are performing opportunities throughout the year, both locally and nationally, alongside professionals such as the Orchestra of Opera North  and the Chorus of Opera North. Young Voices is proud to have performed at the Aldeburgh Festival, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Leeds and Huddersfield Town Hall. Repertoire includes both secular and sacred music, from a variety of genres, with a particular focus of classical music/opera.

Entry is by audition, but we are looking for potential and welcome singers of all levels of experience. Membership fees apply, but we are able to offer financial assistance to ensure that costs do not create a barrier to taking part.

Opera North Young Voices 2020 / 21

The upcoming theme for Opera North Young Voices will be looking at different cultures and music and at reflecting on what home is.

The accompanying artist will be Thandanani Gumede, who worked on his Zulu Song Cycle during Opera North’s first Resonance residency programme, led workshops and coaching for Opera North’s People’s Lullabies project last summer, and will return this year to draw together a further series.
